Finis Terrae Supercomputing infrastructure has been conceived for the efficient resolution of large parallel problems. As a result, Finis Terrae features a total of 7712 processor cores of Intel Xeon E5 Haswell technology, interconnected by a FDR InfiniBand low-latency network using Linux operating system. Since large computing jobs usually process or produce large amounts of data, Finis Terrae incorporates a high-performance parallel storage system based on Lustre, capable of providing simultaneously a high capacity (NET 760 Terabytes) and, above all, a high performance (greater than 20 Gigabytes per second). Thus, calculations are not delayed by the disks input/output operations.
Finis Terrae architecture is based on ‘thin nodes’ using standard Intel processors, suitable for most of the scientific and technical applications. Each node has 128GB RAM, local storage for scratch and 24 cores. Additionally, a FAT node with 4TB and 128 cores is available to respond to those applications requiring a large amount of shared memory, i.e. in a single calculation node, because these issues are usually non resolvable cases on other systems.
Security is guarantee using VPN access. There is also the possibility of using a web portal which includes a remote visualisation environment to allow an easy analysis of your results from your browser.
Consumption is billed every three months on a pay-per-use mode, based on elapsed core hours, including all the executions ended in the last month. Each core hour includes up to 6GB of memory. The amount of memory can be increased by using additional cores. Service is contracted directly from CESGA. It has an initial fee of 200€ per company (only the first time you contract a CESGA service), which includes 3 user accounts and up to 600 GB (+200 scratch). Additional user accounts are billed. User can use any free software application or its own applications, whenever allowed by the corresponding license (CESGA offers more than 100 applications, utilities and preinstalled libraries). The execution of your jobs is using a batch system based on Slurm without priority. A maximum number of jobs in execution is applied using this service.
