EPC is one of biggest manufacturers of engine camshafts in the world. It is a major provider of camshafts for the naval and automotive industries. It is investing in new 3D-measuring equipment for quality control. The use of this measuring equipment results in the acquisition of massive amounts of data. However, current software solutions to exploit this information are not able to process it in production time-scales, so the potential knowledge that might be generated cannot be used.
Cloud-based HPC technology provides a suitable framework to get as much benefit as possible from the data collected, generating information both about the manufactured part itself and the manufacturing process. Currently EPO does not use cloud-based HPC technology. This case study will show that such technology enables manufacturing industries to exploit big data files and consequently generate new know-how about their manufacturing processes.
